How to Clean Blinds Without Damaging Them

Start with the gentlest method

Regular dusting prevents dirt becoming embedded. Close slats in one direction and work from top to bottom with a clean microfibre cloth, feather duster or the soft brush attachment on a vacuum set to low suction.

Do not spray cleaner directly onto a blind. Apply a small amount to the cloth instead, keeping moisture away from headrails, motors, chains and timber edges.

Roller, Roman and vertical fabric blinds

Vacuum fabric blinds carefully with a clean upholstery tool. Small marks on suitable fabrics can be dabbed - never scrubbed - with a barely damp white cloth. Work from the outside of the mark inward and let the blind dry fully while extended.

Some vertical louvres are washable, while others are not. Check the care label or ask the supplier before detaching or immersing any fabric. Roman blinds often have structured rods and linings, so professional cleaning may be safer for significant staining.

Venetian, faux wood and real wood blinds

Aluminium and faux wood slats can usually be wiped with a lightly damp cloth and then dried. Use your other hand to support each slat so it is not bent or pulled from the ladder cord.

Real wood should be treated more cautiously. Use a dry or almost dry cloth and avoid household sprays that may cloud or soften the finish. Never soak timber slats.

When to call for advice
