Use a steel tape and measure in millimetres
Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom, then the drop at the left, centre and right. Recesses are not always square, so record every reading rather than assuming they match.
Do not make your own deductions unless the supplier explicitly asks you to. A recess order and an exact or blind-size order are processed differently.
Recess measurements
A recess blind sits inside the window opening. Check that the recess is deep enough and note anything that projects into the space, including handles, vents, tiles and inward-opening windows.

Exact-size measurements
An exact-size blind is made to the width and drop specified. When planning outside the recess, allow enough overlap to reduce side light and provide privacy without covering sockets, radiators or nearby doors.
Know when not to DIY
Bay windows, bi-fold doors, shaped windows, roof glazing, large motorised blinds and plantation shutters involve more than width and drop. Professional measuring protects both the fit and the warranty.
